10 Cleaning Lessons from Monica Geller

There are three types of cleaning standards. The first one is surface-level cleaning, where we just clean for the sake of it. The second one is deep cleaning, the serious people will follow this standard. The third form is ‘Monica Clean’, this can only be done by people with OCD, like Monica Geller. And I sure am one among them.

We all would have binge-watched the famous sitcom ‘Friends’ multiple times, I have too. My favorite character and my favorite Geller is ‘Monica Geller-Bing’. There are many reasons but the foremost is that she is a clean freak and has OCD, well I do too. Her soul is happy when she cleans things and being a hostess.

There are many lessons one can actually learn from Monica, but in today’s blog I have just concentrated on ‘10 Cleaning lessons we can learn from Monica Geller’.

Let’s jump into the article right away.

1. Take it, use it and keep it in the same place

It actually becomes easy for us to take and use something when it is in its dedicated space. That is how we can manage a place tidy and organized.

If you are taking anything from a place then make sure to keep it in the same place. This is the number 1 reason why a place gets messy.

Monica is so particular about her things and where they stay. She has little organizers and space for everything in her apartment.

2. The couch and pillows should always be fluffy and perfect

The first thing we or any guests see when they enter a home is living room space, sofas and cushions get noticed easily. Making sure there aren’t any unwanted things on it and it is clutter-free is important.

Monica makes sure that her pillows are always fluffy and her sofa and table are neat.

Having a minimalistic sofa and table will really help to keep the space clutter-free without much work.

3. Organization is key

An unorganized home and a messy home can cause you a lot of mental imbalances and will cost you inner peace. You will end up wasting a lot of time trying to find something and it will always be in vain. You would slowly start to hate your place.

An organized place will help you save your time, money, and peace. You will know where the things are exactly and they look neat and pleasant; which is more important.

Try to de-clutter your space and start arranging things in order. Throw or donate the items which you are no more using. Just understand, by having these unwanted things, you are wasting a lot of space and energy.

4. Make the cleaning process fun by adding some glam

The end result of cleaning can be wonderful, but not everyone will enjoy the process of cleaning. If you are someone who loves having an organized and beautiful home but hates cleaning, then you should definitely try adding some colors to your cleaning process.

You can listen to music while cleaning, you can even play your favorite TV show while cleaning. So you have something running in the background, and by listening you can clean your space.

Try to reward yourself after a deep clean process. Like you can have your favorite dessert or you can have a small cheat meal at the end of the day. Set your reward and start working.

5. If you see it, clean it

If you see a place untidy, make it a point to clean it immediately. Just have some kitchen towels and clean the dirt. Piling things up is your greatest enemy, if you start by cleaning one small place at a time, you will end up cleaning a lot in a couple of days.

6. No eating in bed

Eating in bed can actually be fun and relaxing. But no matter how much we try, we will always make it dirty by leaving some crumbles or stains in it. So next time you feel like eating on a bed, just try stopping yourself from doing that.

Also having a dedicated space to do things is really beneficial. Avoid watching a show while eating. The food you are eating will not get digested properly and you will also not enjoy the different tastes in your food. Always have your food in a dedicated space, you will thank me later.

7. Cleaning supplies needs to be cleaned too

All your cleaning supplies like, vacuum cleaner, towels, etc, needs cleaning too. This makes the entire process squeaky clean.

Schedule one day in your calendar to clean those kinds of stuff, you are all set.

Monica is just the happiest when she is cleaning. I do follow this routine, I have small clothes that I use to dust my table and stuff. I wash them frequently so they can be clean and all prepped up for my next cleaning routine.

8. Be okay with the fact that, we can't control the mess

When we are having our friends or family at our place, there is only so much we can control. Don’t be too rigid with yourself and expect everyone to have OCD as we have.

Just kidding, not everyone will follow your rules, and that is okay. They are your favorite people, just enjoy with them. We can always clean later and have our own party.

9. Close the pen with its cap after use

If you are using a pen, marker or highlighter make sure you close the tap till you hear that ‘cling’ sound. This enables the pen won’t dry soon and it will serve you better.

I am a weird person that way, I just can’t take it when someone else uses my pen. I am strict like Monica, and always check if the other person had closed the cap properly. This will also prevent stains on your clothes.

10. Do not let anyone else clean your room/apartment

Remember that episode where Chandler tries to impress Monica by cleaning her apartment? Well, his notion is commendable and sweet, but people just can’t get it right. The fridge magnets, the linen arrangements, and everything would just be messed up and if you don’t like it, you will hate it. So why struggle afterward, just don’t let anyone else clean your space.

These are all the 10 Lessons I learned from Monica. Hope you liked reading the blog. Now tell me, what is your favorite lesson, or which one cleaning technique do you religiously follow? I would love to know. Drop it in the comments section below.
